Collage
How did the studio lesson relate to the given Big Idea - Identity?
This studio lesson related to the Big Idea, Identity, because moving to all of these different places really had an impact on who I am today! I grew up in Texas and knew that I wanted something different for college so I went away to school at the University of Missouri. While, in school my parents moved across the country to Michigan for two years and then just recently moved back home to Texas.
How might you employ visual art integration utilizing the studio lesson in your own classroom?
- I could use this lesson in a history or geography lesson and have students make a collage of a particular place that has shaped their own identity.
- Integrate technology into the lesson by showing a video of the state or city that we were focusing on.
- Compare and contrast population densities based on the cities and states the students were chosen.
Antagonist vs. Protagonist
This studio lesson related to Identity in that we had to identify with one particular disney character which was a real challenge for me. This lesson forced me to look at myself from a different point of view and assess my own strengths and weaknesses in a way that they could relate to someone else. I chose Dot from a Bug's Life mainly because she's little and sweet but at the same time is brave, determined and can be pretty feisty which are all qualities that I know that I have in me that sometimes get overlooked by my other friendlier qualities, which is something that Dot struggles with as well. Choosing my antagonist is where I struggled the most. It was hard for me to come up with some "evil" qualities. I think if I had approached the antagonist character in a way where I found some things that I struggle with rather than finding "evil" qualities I'd be able to come up with an antagonist that better fits my personality.
I would integrate this lesson in my classroom by giving my students a few more guidelines. One of the reasons that I struggled with this lesson was that I had too many choices and I needed a little more direction and less characters to choose from. Something else that I could do with this lesson is to integrate it into a lesson where instead of a disney character I could have my students pick a famous person from history that they can relate to.

Personification
This studio lesson focuses on personification using classical literature. The big idea Identity is incorporated into this lesson with how I feel about excess. In this collage there is a giant palace in the background and then a princess body to show how the elaborate way that society pushes on all of us to live. However, the simple background with the potted tulips, the peaches, simple bed and the "Keep it Simple People" is my way of saying that you don't need all of the over the top accessories that are out there to be happy. I also used a Vizsla dog for the head of the princess because Viszla puppies are known to be happy just with the love of their owner/companion.
I could incorporate this lesson in a very similar way within my classroom. I would use this as a way to teach students about personification and for them to really think deep about what's important to them and to show be able to create this through art. I also think that this lesson could be used to teach about satire and could be used to create political cartoons with the upper grades.
