Political Cartoon
This studio lesson we focused on cartoon making to show the Big Idea of stories. This cartoon that I drew is of an African girl with her lunch and a note from her mom that says: "Make sure you eat all of your lunch, there are starving children in America. Love, Mom" This is a political cartoon that uses satire to highlight how much Americans focus on helping other countries when in reality we have a lot that we can focus on right here in our country.
In my future classroom I can use cartoon drawing in a history class or a current events class to help my students think a little more critically of what they are studying. Creating cartoons gives a lighter way of portraying a deeper issue which I think is a fantastic way to approach some of the heavier issues that sometimes are just brushed over in the younger grades.

3-D Sculpture
This studio lesson we focused on sculpting with everyday objects to show the Big Idea of Stories. My group: Katie Cooney, Jessica Johnson, Kathleen Kavanaugh and Erin McHargue, decided to focus on inner beauty. We used outer beauty products such as lipstick, hair ties and earrings to show that inner beauty if what is most important. The quote: " You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you", is a quote from the bible found in Song of Soloman 4:7. We wrote this quote on top of torn out pages of the bible that we felt represented our message the best which is: that at the end of the day how we are on the inside, our inner beauty, is all that matters.
I can integrate this lesson in so many ways into my classroom - one way that comes to mind immediately is to create instruments from random objects found in the house. These instruments can be used in a science class when studying pitch and volume with sound.

Water Color
This studio lesson we focused on water color using our favorite children's book to show the Big Idea of Stories. I chose the story The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein for this project because it is one of my all time favorite children's book. The Giving Tree has such an important message that is written in a sweet way for young kids to understand and appreciate all of the people around them and gives them a little glimpse into the essence of time.
I could use this in my own classroom in any literacy class or writing class. I can have the students find their own story book that they love, pick a favorite quote from that story and use watercolors and crayons/colored pencils to portray what that quote means to them.
